The village is named for Alpheus Beede Stickney, a railroad executive who played a central role in establishing the Clearing Industrial District.
Alpheus Beede Stickney was born in Wilton, Maine, on June 27, 1840, the first son of Daniel Stickney and his third wife, Ursula Maria Beede.
The railroad of Alpheus Beede Stickney, the Minnesota Central Railroad Company (MCRR), built the Cannon Valley railroad out from Red Wing through Northfield to Faribault in 1882, pushing on to Mankato.
On December 10, 1972, just a month after having retired from Youngstown State University, Beede died in a drowning accident at Little Beaver Creek near his farm in Elkton, Ohio, located in Columbiana County.
As his obituary notes: "The coaching game in the area is filled with his proteges such as "Dike" Beede, Youngstown College; Ches McPhee, Chaney (High School); Dick Barrett, East High athletics director and for 25 years a coach; Jack Cramb, North (High School); Cyril James, formerly of Ursuline (High School) and Sharon (High School); Howard Hartman, assistant at Colgate (University); Wes Fesler and others".
The stockyards were organized in 1886 by Alpheus Beede Stickney, who was the president of the Chicago Great Western Railway.
