Beekes, the name predates Greek presence in the region and could come from the Pre-Greek form reconstructed as *Kʷʰeťťal-.
According to Robert Beekes, it is of undoubtedly pre-Greek origin due to the variant ending in "-ᾰ".
Although traditionally translated as "plant eaten by fawns", this could be folk etymology and, according to Beekes, really a Pre-Greek word.
In terms of linguistic history, this verb is related to forms such as the English “be”, German sein or Latin esse (Lohmann 1960: 174; Pfeifer 1993: 1273; Beekes 2010: 1598).
Beekes asserts that the presence of a language related to Etruscan on the island of Lemnos (roughly 65 km from Athos peninsula in northeastern Greece and 70 km from Troas in Turkey), Lemnian, represents a remnant from those remaining after the migration from the Proto-Tyrsenian urheimat in northwest Asia Minor.
Beekes considers it Pre-Greek, which matches the timeframe of an early Illyrian origin of the ethnonym through the legendary story of Cadmus and the Enchelei.
