  • On the sides of Katahdin are four glacial cirques carved into the granite by alpine glaciers and in these cirques behind moraines and eskers are several ponds.
  • They may either be seasonal features as supraglacial lakes, or permanent features which form in the hollows left by cirques in formerly glaciated areas.
  • Numerous cirques were left on the mountain slopes by water as it repeatedly froze and thawed, including a depression on the northeast slope known as the snowbowl, and another on the south slope which has now been filled by Lake Tear of the Clouds.

  • Glen Clova is remarkable for its glaciated landscape, with the deep trough-heads of Glen Doll and Corrie Fee, an array of classic corries (glacial cirques) along its NE rim - notably Corrie Bonhard, Corrie of Clova, Corrie Brandy and Corrie Wharrel, and a cluster of diverse "rock slope failures" (rock slides, avalanches, and deformations) including The Rives on Cairn Broadlands, and several in the corries.
  • Once the volcano's central conduit congealed, it underwent hydrothermal alteration over time, which has been revealed by several cirques.
  • To the north are situated the deep and waterless cirques Golemiya Kazan and Malkiya Kazan, known as the Kazanite (the cauldrons).
  • The Weminuche Wilderness was glaciated during the Pleistocene and the current landscape is dominated by glacial landforms including horns, arêtes, cirques, tarns, moraines, and U-shaped valleys.
