Males of the former subgenus are characterized by possessing an extremely long virga with needle-like sclerotization, species of the later characterized by a short virga and a weakly developed crista dorsalis in the adult male hypopygium (Stur and Ekrem 2015).
Between tergite 5 of the abdomen and the hypopygium only one sclerite is present dorsally, with two close-set spiracles on each side.
Species of Shireplitis differ from related genera in the subfamily Microgastrinae in having relatively shorter and stouter legs, shorter antennal segments in females, and sculpturing of the propodeum (first abdominal segment), and in the structure of the hypopygium, a modified 9th abdominal segment.
