  • His chief works in this connection are Zur ältesten Geschichte der Indogermanischen Völker (1845), in which he endeavoured to give an account of the earliest civilization of the Indo-Germanic peoples before their separation into different families, by comparing and analysing the original meaning of the words and stems common to the different languages; Die Herabkunft des Feuers und des Göttertranks (1859; new edition by Ernst Kuhn, under title of Mythologische Studien, 1886); and Über Entwicklungsstufen der Mythenbildung (1873), in which he maintained that the origin of myths was to be looked for in the domain of language, and that their most essential factors were polysemy and homonymy.
  • His great achievement, however, was preparing volumes iii, iv, and v on syntax entitled Vergleichende Syntax der indogermanischen Sprachen in Grundriß der vergleichenden Grammatik der indogermanischen Sprachen ("Outline of the Comparative Grammar of the Indo-Germanic Languages"), published in Strassburg between 1893 and 1900 by Delbrück and Karl Brugmann.
  • It was based on the previous Indo-Germanic grammar by August Schleicher, and that in turn on the previous effort of Franz Bopp.
  • In 1899, Chadwick published three works: "Ablaut problems in the Indo-Germanic Verb" in Indogermanische Forschungen, "Studies in Old English" in Transactions of the Cambridge Philological Society, and his first book, The Cult of Othin, which was published by Cambridge University Press.
  • Among these were Institute for Indo-Germanic Intellectual History (Munich), Institute of Biology and Race Studies (Stuttgart), Institute of Religious Studies (Halle), Institute of Germanic Studies (Kiel), Institute of Ideological Colonial Studies (Hamburg), Institute of German Folklore (Münster and Graz), Institute for Research on the East (Prague), Institute of Celtic Studies (Römhild) and Institute for the Study of Germanism and Gallicanism (Strasbourg).
  • It was mentioned in an 877 charter (granting permission to build a church for the village, then part of the parish of Mullem) as 'villa uscias', an incorrect Latinisation of the Indo-Germanic hydronym "usa-ja".
  • The opposition between an Indo-Germanic, dolichocephalic Apollo and an Asian, brachycephalic Dionysus forms the mythological part of the racial conflict that has allegedly pitted Indo-Germanic, Nordic peoples against Asian, Oriental populations since time immemorial.
