To judge from the imitations of Plautus (Casina from the Κληρούμενοι, Asinaria from the Ὀναγός, Rudens from some other play), he was very skillful in the construction of his plots.
On the Latin stage the prologue was often more elaborate than it was in Athens, and in the careful composition of the poems which Plautus prefixes to his plays we see what importance he gave to this portion of the entertainment; sometimes, as in the preface to the Rudens, Plautus rises to the height of his genius in his adroit and romantic prologues, usually placed in the mouths of persons who make no appearance in the play itself.
He was the author of numerous scholarly works, including editions of: Plautus' play "Rudens" (1928), writings by the encyclopaedist Aulus Cornelius Celsus (1915), Filastrius' "Diversarum hereseon liber" (1898), fragments from the satirist Gaius Lucilius (1894-95) and a critical examination of "Rhetorica ad Herennium" (1894); the latter work being published over several editions up to the year 1993.
Petkevičaitė took the work to Jonas Jablonskis and Vincas Kudirka, who edited the work for grammar and spelling, changed the title to Rudens vakaras (Autumn Evening), and published it in farmer's calendar for 1895 under the pen name Žemaitė thus launching her literary career.
